Incubation Period: Antibodies for HIV can appear as early as a few weeks after being infected with the HIV-1 virus. The bulk of the population would demonstrate HIV-1 antibodies after 3 months from a potential contact or exposure. In rare circumstances, it could take past 6 months to be decectible for HIV-1. Antibodies for HIV can appear as early as a fre weeks after being infected with the HIV-2 virus. HIV-2 antibodies may take more than 6 months to be detectible.
Early detection is important so that treatment may begin as soon as possible and assist with delaying the onset of serious complications. In addition, knowing your status will enable you to take the necessary steps in preventing the transmission of HIV to others.
